Project Recipe Book: Kitty Treats

Kitty Treats!

Another little gem off of Pinterest, at first glance this little number will undoubtedly mess with your mind, particularly if one or more of your family members is of the feline variety.  While this dessert may appear positively revolting due to the, shall we say, familiar shapes, in its tradition square state, this cake-like brownie recipe is quite yummy and easy to put together.

You can find the original version of this brownie recipe here on All Recipes.  I’ve made a few minor adjustments, with the most significant difference being that my version has less sugar. My family enjoys eating brownies with vanilla ice cream, so this less sweet option is much more complimentary.

Kitty Treats

(aka brownies – serves 6-8)

Ingredients:

INGKT_JBrisebois6001

1/2 cup of margarine (melted)
2 eggs
1/2 cup of all-purpose flour
1/2 cup of brown sugar
1/3 cup of cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 teaspoon of instant coffee (optional)
3 cups of granola cereal (for the litter)

Instructions:

preheat oven to 350F
in a mixing bowl add the sugar, eggs and vanilla to the melted margarine
then add flour, cocoa powder, instant coffee and baking powder
pour into greased pan and bake for 22-25 minutes (or more depending on your oven – be careful not to overcook)

form the kitty litter shapes once the brownies have cooled a little, but are still warm
arrange on granola cereal

A Few Tips

The trick to getting the brownies to take shape is to work with the brownie cake while it is still fairly warm.  Once it has cooled too much the cake will start to crumble when handled.  Wetting your hands with a little water can also help get those characteristic shapes just right.

You can have a lot of fun with the presentation of this dessert.  I went the authentic route and picked up a handled storage bin and kitty litter scoop at a dollar store.  Let’s just say this small effort made a big impact on my Halloween party guests and the resulting photo-ops were hilarious (and much too scandalous to post publicly haha).
